Introducing MicroPoints!

Hey guys!

Welll sorry about my complete lack of presence... again. Embarrassment

As always, I'm completely snowed under by work and most other commitments.
This year, in addition to web dev, I've become a tutor at the uni where I work, teaching some upcoming young students the finer points of introductory multimedia. Smile

And while it's still taking a hefty while, we do have some UberGames stuff coming through the pipeline still.
That being said, one of these projects finally came to fruition last week. Something I've been somewhat slow to formally announce here. Mischief

RedTechie and I have been studying iPhone development. We've purchased an Apple Developers account and have spent a little time in the last few months playing with the SDK.

The first iPhone app we completed together has now been released on the Apple App Store. Big Grin

The app's named MicroPoints, and as you might be able to guess, it's an app that converts normal currencies into Microsoft Points... something that anyone with an Xbox 360 would find handy. Glee

Since MicroPoints is our first app, it's a bit of a small one. Most of the dev time was spent learning the ins and outs of coding the iPhone (things like building UIs, button callbacks, saving user data, loading static data etc), so it went quite slowly. But all in all, we're glad at the outcome.

The app is on sale on the iTunes store for $0.99 USD. After doing some comparisons, we figured the quality of the app is on par with the other paid MS Points apps on the store, so we'd see how it goes down.
(I might touch up on this later... this may serve as a bit of pre-cursor to some other monetary based endeavors later on...)

There are some plans to make it free for a limited time soon so stay tuned. Big Grin

Thanks guys! If you have an Xbox, please check it out! Glee

UberGames Developers Wiki

Okay... this is probably my final contribution to the UberGames site in a little while... I've spent like a year working on this entire site, and I'm at the point where I want to be rid of it and back to working on projects. Mischief

Sooo here's my latest experiment... another wiki! Mischief

http://www.ubergames.org/devwiki/

This here is the UberGames DevWiki. It's similar to the Public Wiki, but it's pretty different in terms of function.

The point of this Wiki is to give us UberGames developers a place to write design documentation and status updates for any projects we're working on.

Up until this point, I've been writing all of my design documentation in my own threads in a private forum on here.... but I recently came to the realization that method sucks as it's really confusing to keep track of threads as people reply to them and they shuffle around. Sick

So with this wiki, hopefully it's going to be a lot easier to manage documentation than in a forum.

Now for the experimental part of this thing.... the experimental part is that this wiki is semi-public, unlike my design threads.
Since the more stuff we keep private and internal, the more it looks like we're not doing anything, I'd like to try and make as much stuff publicly viewable as possible.

Also, the more stuff we make visible, the more interest we can potentially curry for more people to come along and help out. Smile

By semi-public, I mean there are a few portions of the wiki that aren't available to public view... mainly being project ideas or concepts we've been holding onto, and aren't ready to actually announce yet... either because they might not actually be feasible, or there's not enough info yet.

In any case, we'll see how we go with this thing. As always, let me know if you see anything broken. Mischief

Thanks guys!

UberGames Public Wiki

Hey guys!

There was a little bit of a discussion of this happening before, but now that I completed a major milestone on it, I figured we should have a dedicated thread to it.

I've been working on this on and off for a few months now. Back-to-back it would have only taken a week to do, but with all of my other stuff, it took this crazy long lol. Mischief

The UberGames wiki now has a new skin applied to it. one that brings it in line with the theme of the rest of the site! Glee

So that being said, even though its status hasn't changed, I'd like to point out the UberGames wiki is open and ready for editing. Smile

http://www.ubergames.org/wiki

The next step, and one I haven't thought of at all in a while is what kind of content still needs adding there. Also, there were a few cool templates floating around for the Main Page screen... I'll have to see how well they fit in this skin. Mischief

In any case, aside from that, my next plan is duplicate this wiki and turn that copy into a developers' wiki... and then get to work actually documenting all of the backend stuff I know for RPG-X, EF and Q3 there. Smile

Enjoy!

Introducing DesktopTweet!
Posted by TiM on 7-26-2009, 6:34PM  |  2 Comments

Hey guys!

Sorry it's been a bit of a while since I've been really active on the forums. I've been busy on multiple fronts lately. Embarrassment

The main thing is still working on the CG for this TV episode still, and I dare say it's still going to be a little longer before it's finished.
I've been working with a cool guy called Kelly Meyers for the past month or so. Kelly was one of the main VFX tech guys for season 2 and 3 of Battlestar Galactica, and the shots he's cranking out for this show look niiiice. I'm hoping if I get clearance, I can post some more pictures up here in the forums. Smile

Secondly, I just finished the final hurdle of a small C# utility I've been working on. I started it originally so I could use it as a bit of training for the kind of coding I was doing at work, and now it's finished. Big Grin

The utility is called DesktopTweet, and as you can guess, it's a utility designed to work with Twitter.
Simply put, DesktopTweet lets you quickly snap pictures of your desktop screen, and then post them on Twitter straight away.
I've been putting a lot of time and effort into getting it finished quickly and now, because I now want to use it to post updates on all of the other projects I'm working on.

Since it's not reeeeeally about games, I decided not to make it under the UberGames mantle, but now since Dom's released NetSwarm here, I'm thinking maybe I could have haha... Embarrassment

In any case, if you use Twitter, please give it a try. Big Grin

http://www.desktoptweet.net/

From here on, I'm focussing back on working on refining the UberGames site again. At the moment, there's still a lot of stuff I want to do in the backend system... including a few bugs I've picked up on, but hopefully I'll be a bit more active from here on.

Thanks! Smile

NetSwarm is now released!
Posted by Dom on 6-12-2009, 1:01PM  |  3 Comments

NetSwarm, a network monitoring screen saver and desktop application from UberGames, is now officially available for download through the projects website: http://www.ubergames.org/projects/netswarm/

NetSwarm monitors all network activity which your computer receives and then compiles a logical swarm of the network nodes (machines/devices). This process visually demonstrates how your network communicates within itself and the outside world. NetSwarm can be ran as a monitoring utility (Stand Alone EXE) or as a screen saver.

NetSwarm uses colour coded nodes (circles) to inform you of the type of traffic you have communicating on your network. A green node indicates an internal IP address (including VPN addresses), where as a light blue node indicates a remote address. Yellow nodes represent either a broadcast or multicast address. NetSwarm can be configured through the settings window to ignore external IP addresses.

NetSwarm also changes the colour of the links (lines) between nodes depending on what transport protocol is being utilized between the two nodes. Red links indicate TCP traffic. Green links indicate ICMP traffic and blue links represent UDP traffic. If a mixture of protocols are being utilized NetSwarm will morph the colour of the link to represent the ratio of use for each protocol.
