1. What is Q3E Minimizer?

Q3E Minimizer is a small Windows utility I made that lets you hide and restore any active Quake 3 games you are playing. I started work on it in 2003 and have subsequently continued to release versions of it up until v1.51 in 2005 where I decided to cease support on it in favour of other projects.

2. What can you do with it?

The bottom line of Q3E Minimizer is that you can use it to forcibly hide and then quickly restore an active instance of pretty much every major Quake III Engine based computer game. It also includes several extra features to accomodate this such as automatic screen resolution switching if you play games at a lower resolution.
The main reason this is all necessary however is because all Quake III Engine games disable the 'alt-tab' button as they are running, meaning getting out of the game is somewhat harder than it should normally be.

3. Why should I have it then?

Well, if you're the type of person who likes to play games in fullscreen mode and also likes to frequently drop back to the desktop, then I definitely recommend you download this tool! :)
Personally, I always keep Windows Live Messenger, Skype and my email client running at all times on my second monitor so I can see when someone starts to talk to me. In which case, the next time I die (Often takes a while... har har. XD) I can nip out of the game, send a quick reply and pop back in. I also sometimes have iTunes running the background, so I can also jump out and adjust my tunes as necessary as well. :)

4. How did you make it?

Oof.... let's just say this whole project was one heck of a learning experience. I didn't even know what 'API' stood for until about version 1.30! XD
I started off on this program during my last year of high school after we were taught some Visual Basic 6 syntax and logic in my IT class.
Suffice it to say, the first two weeks of this project was nothing but heavy heavy Googling on every subject of the matter. I had the core logic laid down in my mind, but I didn't know how to set up certain things, like the hotkeys and system tray. Thankfully, the internet had tonnes of information on the matter, and so after a bit of playing around in VB 6 for the code and Adobe Photoshop 6 for the graphics, I managed to cobble together v1.0!
After that, it was just an iterative process. Everytime enough people mailed me with game suggestions, I would update the code as well as refine it more with new code tips I had seen at the time. By v1.51, I think the code was looking pretty shiny. ^_^

5. Why not just run the game in window mode!?

Bah! BAH! The number of times people have asked me this! >_<
If you prefer to run ALL of your Quake III games in windowed mode, then yeah, you don't need this program. ;P
But in my humble opinion, I really don't think playing a game in windowed mode gives you the true experience, nor the same visual quality as fullscreen mode. This is doubly true of the Quake 3 Engine since it has better control over your monitor's display options in fullscreen, so there is indeed a noticable visual drop.
But... I can't change your opinion hehe. You should do what you think feels best for you. I personally intend to continue playing my games at fullscreen mode. ;P

6. Woah! Why did my desktop turn super bright?

Ah... that's a result of Quake 3 changing your screen's gamma setting to a level that makes the game appear more vibrant. It's perfectly normal for the game, but it makes your monitor look very strange.
If you can, I recommend you simply put up with it. If you really hate it, then it's possible to get Quake 3 to leave your gamma alone by typing '/r_overBrightBits 0' into the ingame console, but it might make the game look a little more bland.

8. Can I suggest another game to add?

Haha, very kind of you, but I'm no longer accepting suggestions for games. As of v1.50, I've ceased development of Q3E Minimizer in favour of other projects.
I've released the source code to Q3E Minimizer, so if you are interested in, you can take a look yourself.
